Trent Alexander-Arnold has delivered a honest verdict after Liverpool were thumped 3-0 at Brighton on Saturday
Trent Alexander-Arnold admits Liverpool’s performance at Brighton and Hove Albion was “completely unacceptable” and believes too much was “wrong fundamentally” with their performance.
The Reds slumped to their heaviest Premier League defeat since February 2021 when they were thumped 3-0 on the South Coast on Saturday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp’s side mustered only two shots on target as they were comprehensively outplayed by a Brighton side earning the biggest-ever win over the Reds in their history.
Liverpool have now slipped to ninth in the table and have already dropped points in as many games – 10 – as they did the whole of last season.
And Alexander-Arnold said: “It’s not what we wanted as a team and it just wasn’t good enough, if I’m honest, in any area of the pitch – all areas, to be honest. It wasn’t good enough.
“Credit to Brighton, they’re a top team and they played outstandingly well. So, they deserved the three points and we didn’t.
“I think there were a lot of things wrong fundamentally and we got a lot of things wrong out there. Not many positives, if any, to take from this game, but we go back and look at what went wrong and make sure something like this doesn’t happen again because, like I said, this was completely unacceptable.”
Liverpool have little time to dwell on the defeat, with Tuesday’s FA Cup third round replay at Wolverhampton Wanderers followed by a Premier League visit of Chelsea on Saturday.
And speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Alexander-Arnold said: “I suppose if you try to put a positive spin on things then it’s something we can use as motivation.
“We don’t want anything like this to happen again and we need to bounce back – that’s something that is a given at this point now. We need to bounce back in the next one.”
