Cheeky Wednesday Fan Theory Connects Thing to Evil Dead – And Bruce Campbell Approves

A new fan theory suggests that Thing originated from Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-classic The Evil Dead and star Bruce Campbell appears to agree.

A fan theory connects Netflix’s Wednesday to Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-classic horror film The Evil Dead – and it even has the official Bruce Campbell seal of approval.

A tweet by user @patriot_wilson shows a side-by-side photo of Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday with Thing perched on her shoulder, and Ashley “Ash” Williams (Campbell) with a severed hand in The Evil Dead, suggesting Ash’s hand crawled all the way to Nevermore to join forces with Wednesday. Campbell himself quote-tweeted the side-by-side, writing, “You said it, not me.”

Netflix’s Wednesday has proven itself as a goldmine for fan theories, crossovers, and creative fan art. Recently, a TikTok user imagined Chainsaw Man‘s Aki Hayakawa engaging in a battle with the sullen schoolgirl. Other theories tie the show to stories by horror-writer Edgar Allan Poe and even to Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal of the Joker.

Is There More Wednesday Coming?

Viewers may receive even more opportunities to come up with theories about Wednesday, as showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar recently teased that they already have plans for a second season of the show. Gough revealed he hopes to continue to flesh out the complex relationship between Wednesday and her werewolf roommate, Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), explaining that he hopes to watch the protagonist “navigate the ups and downs of friendship.” Millar noted that he wants to expand on the relationship between Wednesday and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), noting that the duo has plans for “at least three or four seasons” of Wednesday.

While there is no news just yet on whether Netflix will order a second season of Wednesday, the show’s numbers bode well for a potential renewal, as it is currently on the path to becoming the streamer’s most popular series ever. The show currently holds 752.5 hours viewed, which makes it Netflix’s third most-watched English-language TV show, behind Stranger Things, and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Wednesday also holds the record for Netflix’s most-watched English-language show within a one-week period, bringing in 341.2 million hours viewed in seven days, against previous record-holder Stranger Things‘ 335.01 million.

Season 1 of Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
