The 2023 Infiniti Q50 may be an aging offering in the luxury car segment, but the luxury brand still has a few tricks up its sleeve to help keep the long-running model fresh in the eyes of customers. In the case of the all-new 2023 Infiniti Q50 Opal Edition, it gets an all-new color-shifting paint scheme that allows it to draw plenty of attention to itself while also basking in the rarity that often comes with a limited production run.
Black Opal Edition Color Shifting Paint Is New Take On Familiar Gimmick
With the bulk of the 2023 Infiniti Q50 again carrying over largely unchanged, the Black Opal Edition represents the most significant 2023 update that the Q50 will receive. A prominent feature of this flavor of Q50 is the Black Opal Metallic paint, which can change colors depending on the angle the light hits it. Infiniti claims that the paint can change to green, purple, and blue and is reminiscent of the Mystichrome paint that Ford used on Mustang models in the mid-1990s, with that shade of paint doing roughly the same thing albeit in a more dramatic fashion.
In addition to the color-changing paint, Infiniti has added an exposed carbon fiber rear spoiler and satin black badging to make the Black Opal Edition stand out more. This special edition is exclusive to the Red Sport 400 model, so buyers looking to add it to lower trim levels will be out of luck. The interior gets blacked out and benefits from supportive black leather seats with diamond quilting on the bolsters. Performance for the Black Opal Edition comes from the familiar 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that still makes 400 horsepower and is mated to a seven-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but buyers can opt for an optional all-wheel drive system.
When Can I Buy One?
Infiniti didn’t reveal when the Black Opal Edition will make its way to dealerships but with the minimal amount of changes on hand, look for it to make its appearance this coming Spring. Pricing information was also not disclosed. Still, Infiniti reps claim that the model will be “extremely rare” but declined to reveal how many of these models will be built. These light updates also serve as a broader glimpse into Infiniti’s long-term plans, with the luxury brand shifting towards an all-SUV lineup and even preparing an all-electric model to help it stake a claim in the growing EV segment.
