When Kaylie and Brandon found out that they would soon become parents of triplets, they couldn’t hide their joy. They knew their children would be extraordinary. However, they did not expect that they would end up in the Guinness Book of Records. All because at the end of the 22nd week of pregnancy, premature birth occurred, which resulted in two of them being born five days after the first brother.
Kaylie and Brandon DeShane from New York had been trying to ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇ for four years. Unfortunately, attempts to get pregnant were unsuccessful. So they decided to adopt eight-year-old Holden and 13-year-old Navaeh.
Despite creating a family for the adopted children, the couple did not intend to give up their dreams of having a biological child and decided to try ᴀʀᴛɪꜰɪᴄɪᴀʟ ɪɴ ᴠɪᴛʀᴏ ꜰᴇʀᴛɪʟɪᴢᴀᴛɪᴏɴ.
“We decided to place two ᴇᴍʙʀʏᴏs because we thought it would increase our chances of having a baby. Doctors told us that there is a 10% chance of having twins and a 1% chance of having triplets. We never expected such a scenario,” says Kaylie. “When we found out we had three children, we were sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ, but it was amazing. We would be happy with one child, and it turned out that there will be more,” she adds.
Unfortunately, such a pregnancy is associated with great ʀɪsᴋ. At 16 weeks, it was discovered that her ᴄᴇʀᴠɪx could not withstand such a load and had to be stitched. Even then, Kaylie was two centimeters dilated.
After sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ, Kaylie’s only job was to rest. Everything was fine until the end of week 22, when she went for tests. Even though they showed nothing and the pregnancy was healthy, her waters broke the same day.
“I was terrified. I didn’t know if the children would survive,” mom said.
Then, on December 28, 2019, the first of the triplets, Cian, was born. The boy was immediately transported to the ICU, and doctors gave him only a nine percent chance of survival.
Fortunately, the other children did not intend to follow in their brother’s footsteps, and after Kaylie’s condition stabilized, they were kept in the ᴡᴏᴍʙ for another five days. Rowan and Declan were born on January 2, 2020. This means that there is a five-day age difference between them and the first of the triplets, and they were born in two different decades.
“The children spent a total of four months in the ICU. Each of them was fighting for their lives,” says Kaylie.
The story of the birth of triplets is so unusual that the babies made it into the Guinness Book of Records. They set the record for the longest birth interval of triplets, which reached five days, 12 hours, and 34 minutes.
More than two years have passed since then, and the extraordinary triplets are healthy and developing normally. As Kaylie points out, she and her husband were not sure if the children would be able to live normally, and now all three “give them a hard time.”
