The Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles is one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions – but according to a new study, it’s also the worst.
The landmark, which honours notable personalities in the entertainment industry with five-pointed stars embedded mainly in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk, has come 99th in a ranking of the 99 best and worst major tourist attractions.
The study crowns the Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest the world’s best tourist attraction, Disneyland Paris comes second, the Blue Lagoon in Iceland third and Plaza de Espana in Seville, Spain, comes fourth.
The ranking has been produced by data analysts at luggage storage network Stasher, who scored each attraction out of ten using Tripadvisor reviews, Google reviews, Booking.com’s average user rating for properties within one mile of the attraction’s circumference, the distance from the nearest airport and tourist safety, using the host country’s Global Peace Index rating.
The Hungarian Parliament Building scores 7.34 out of 10, with the researchers noting that 93.4 per cent of its Tripadvisor reviews are ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’, and the building has been viewed on TikTok an incredible 887million times – and counting.
Disneyland Paris scores 7.17 – and is the most popular attraction on TikTok, with tagged posts being viewed a staggering 7.9billion times.
The theme park is popular with Google reviewers, too, with an average rating of 4.5 from 262,000 reviews. Tripadvisor reviews are less positive, however, with 58.2 per cent of visitors rating their experience as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’.
Bronze-medal-winning Blue Lagoon scores 7.15, with researchers revealing it has been viewed over 317.5million times on TikTok.
They also note that the quality of local accommodation is among the highest in the study – averaging 9.2 out of 10 – and it has a Google review total of 4.6 out of 5 from 25,000 reviews.
Making up the rest of the top 10 are Angkor Wat, Cambodia (fifth); St. Peter’s Basilica, Italy (sixth); El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Argentina (seventh); Acropolis of Athens, Greece (eighth); the Museum of New Zealand, in Wellington, New Zealand (ninth), and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (10th).
The UK’s best-rated attraction is the National Gallery in London (24th), which beats America’s top-rated attraction – Disneyland Park California – into 25th place.
And how did Mother Nature perform? Not impressively, with Niagara Falls managing only 54th, the Matterhorn in the Alps coming 63rd and Mount Fuji in Japan ranking only 67th.
Surprised by the Walk of Fame’s position? It does have very mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, with 6,139 people at the time of writing giving it three out of five and 1,147 people rating it as ‘terrible’, with adjectives such as ‘grimy’, ‘sad’ and ‘underwhelming’ popping up in some of the more scathing assessments.
And it also came last in Stasher’s 2019 tourist attraction ranking.
