Ford F-150 Lightning 2022 electric pickup introduced. While other companies are trying to create the most unusual electric pickup, Ford’s marketers have made some common sense.
They say that if Ford F-150 remains the absolute bestseller in the U.S. already for 44 years, it means that electric truck should be made within this family and without daring experiments with design.
So the new Ford F-150 Lightning can be no doubt called the most conservative electric pickup in the U.S. market. And that’s not a bad thing.
By the way, the company has already used the prefix Lightning: at the turn of the century, so called the extreme version of the Ford F-150 pickup, prepared by the SVT division and had the dynamics of a sports car.
Under the hood was a gasoline V8 with a drive supercharger. And the new Ford F-150 Lightning pickup has a 400-liter front trunk there.
It can be loaded with up to 180 kg of luggage, the lid is equipped with an electric drive, and inside there are four household outlets and two USB sockets.
In fact, the electric version though created on the basis of the standard F-150, but has many serious design differences.
For example, there is a different frame — more solid to withstand the weight of the traction battery located between the spars.
The Lightning version has an independent rear suspension, while the petrol F-150s have continuous axle.
There are differences in the interior. Virtual instruments have recently appeared in the base model, and for the electric version in addition you can order Sync 4A media system with a large 15.5-inch vertical tablet, which displaced almost all the hardware buttons from the front panel.
The multimedia has voice control and an over-the-air update function.
The electric Ford F-150 Lightning is offered only with a four-door SuperCrew cab and a 1.68-meter cargo bay.
There are two versions to choose from, both with two electric motors and all-wheel drive (one motor on each axle). The Standard Range has 432 hp and 1,051 Nm of torque.
Mileage on a single charge — 370 km, and payload — 907 kg. The battery capacity is not named, but we are talking about 90 kW∙h.
The Extended Range variant can go about 480 km, and its engines produce 571 hp, although the torque is the same.
Payload of this pickup is reduced to 816 kg, but it can pull a trailer weighing up to 4.5 tons (compared with 3.5 tons of the basic version), and empty — accelerate to «hundred» in about 4.5 seconds.
For comparison, the Tesla Cybertruck has a claimed mileage of 400-800 km (depending on the version), and the GMC Hummer — 400-560 km.
By the way, for extra charge is offered an electronic system with a bunch of sensors, by which it can determine the loading of the pickup and with this data recalculate the mileage on the remaining battery charge.
For an additional fee — BlueCruise autopilot, which allows you to remove your hands from the steering wheel when driving on the highway.
A full battery charge from the simplest home terminal will take 14 hours in the base version and 19 hours in the «long-range» version.
And when connected to a 150kW DC «speaker,» recharging from 15% to 80% will take 41-44 minutes.
The electric Ford can power not only household devices, but also the whole house (for example, in case of power outage), and the power is limited to 9.6 kW.
On sale Ford F-150 Lightning pickups will appear only in a year — the spring of 2022.
Tesla and Hummer should enter the market at the end of 2021, but only in the most expensive versions, which Ford does not have, and «mass» variants are also assigned for 2022.
The starting price has already been announced: Lightning will cost the same $40,000 as the Cybertruck (although this Tesla only has rear-wheel drive), and for the «average» version XLT must pay 53 thousand.
Ford has already opened orders and is collecting 100-dollar deposits.
The Lightning will be produced at the historic Dearborn plant near Detroit, which has undergone a $700 million retrofit and is now called the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center.
