Korean company SsangYong, which in recent years is struggling for survival, has presented its new model — Torres crossover, which got its name in honor of the Chilean national park Torres del Paine.
This budget all-terrain vehicle was developed in the conditions of the crisis, that is, against the background of constant lack of funding. The car itself is intended to interest travel enthusiasts.
SsangYong deeply redesigns new Torres SUV to improve off-road performance.
SsangYong is preparing several interesting new products for 2023. And mostly it will be SUVs.
According to current information the Korean company is finalizing the development of the new electric SsangYong Torres 2023.
It is reported that engineers will not confine themselves only to change of the engine range, and make deeper changes to the car.
The first photos revealing the exterior of the SUV has hit the web with the code name U100.
According to rumors, this model is the electric Torres.
This is also indicated by the design of the stern of the Korean novelty. Judging by the photos, the company SsangYong will redesign the front end of the SUV.
It is not known yet what will be changed. But representatives of Korean company said that the work mainly comes to optimize body’s configuration to reduce aerodynamic drag.
For this purpose engineers will remove the radiator grille and install new wheels.
SsangYong Torres has off-road exterior design with a brutal «muzzle». The latter is remembered for its angular bumper, moody LED headlights and rectangular grille.
The car has black plastic trim around the perimeter of the body and vertical headlights on the stern.
Depending on the equipment, it could be equipped with 17- to 20-inch wheels.
About the technical characteristics of the electric Torres nothing is reported. However, it is known that the batteries for this model will buy from Chinese company BYD, which is gradually becoming one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers.
According to the Korean media, it is also helping to develop the electric SUV.
Simultaneously with body adjustments, SsangYong engineers will upgrade the suspension.
SsangYong Torres 2023 is based on the stretched Korando crossover platform.
The model has a load-bearing body, transverse engine location and basic front drive, that is not suitable for serious lack of roads.
The exact dimensions of the new model has not yet been announced, but in the lineup of the brand the car should take an intermediate position between the mentioned Korando (4 450 mm) and larger Rexton (4 850 mm).
The volume of the trunk under the curtain is claimed at 703 liters. By folding the rear seats, its capacity can be increased to 1,662 liters.
In addition, for extra charge a lockable box can be ordered for the vehicle, which is mounted on the rear roof rack (like Land Rover Defender).
Torres also got the power units from donor Corando, which means it is powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo T-GDI rated at 170 hp (280 Nm), supplemented by a starter-generator.
It works in conjunction with a six-speed automatic Aisin. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive with a clutch on the rear axle can also be ordered.
Cabin of SUV is strictly two-row (the third row is not offered even for extra charge). There is a compact digital dashboard and 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system.
Plus, the developers have provided another 8.0-inch monitor on the central console, designed to control the climate control, heating and ventilation of front seats. But the model has no projection screen.
They are also going to introduce new systems that improve off-road mobility.
According to preliminary information, the electric Torres will debut in fall 2023. Most likely right after that the car will go on sale.
