Sir Alex Ferguson gesture as Bruno Fernandes makes clear demand

Sir Alex Ferguson was invited to join the Man Utd celebrations in a classy gesture by Erik ten Hag whilst Bruno Fernandes demanded his side go on to win even more trophies.

Manchester United are Wembley winners again after lifting the Carabao Cup to secure their first silverware since 2017.

It has been a long road back to glory but, since the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils have made enormous strides in a short space of time. That manifested itself in the form of a major trophy with Casemiro’s header and a Sven Botman own goal giving United a 2-0 win over Newcastle.

The win was watched by co-owner Avram Glazer and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with the latter invited to join the dressing room celebrations after a memorable afternoon. Here’s a round-up of the main headlines to emerge from a big day for Manchester United after a forgettable few years.

Fernandes demands more

Just minutes after securing Manchester United’s first trophy for six years, Bruno Fernandes called on his team-mates to help the club win even more silverware.

He said: “It’s been amazing and it’s our first trophy of the season, but we want more, it is not enough for this club. We need more because our standards want more.

“For me it was about winning trophies and finally we did it. I am satisfied but I want more. I want much more.”

Ten Hag’s classy Fergie gesture

Erik ten Hag invited iconic former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson into the Red Devils’ dressing room to join in with the celebrations after winning the Carabao Cup.

The Old Trafford outfit ended their near six-year trophy doubt at Wembley on Sunday afternoon – a strike from Casemiro and a Sven Botman own-goal proving to be enough to claim the trophy. It was also a fantastic achievement for Ten Hag with the Dutchman securing his first piece of silverware with the club less than a year after joining the Red Devils.

Amid the post-match celebrations – Ten Hag taking the acclaim of his squad and also dancing with former Ajax stars Lisandro Martinez and Antony – the Dutchman made sure that legendary former manager Ferguson was involved. The pair met in the tunnel shortly after captain Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes had lifted the trophy.

Man Utd beat Newcastle to lift the Carabao Cup

Carabao Cup prize money

Manchester United have won their first trophy since 2017 but will have earned just £100,000 in prize money for their endeavours.

First-half goals from star midfielder Casemiro and the unstoppable Marcus Rashford, with the help of a heavy deflection off Sven Botman, broke Newcastle United’s hearts with Eddie Howe’s team banking only £50,000 for their efforts.

That will barely cover half a week’s wage for one of their highest earners as the secondary domestic knockout competition’s financial value was placed in stark contrast with what can be banked elsewhere. But the clubs will at least have split the gate receipts at Wembley, where 87,306 fans had been in attendance.
