An extreme explosion in outer space known as a kilonova is unlike anything you’ve ever heard of. That’s because it’s actually two stars coming together and putting on a spectacular light show that makes it stand out from everything else in the universe, not simply one star exploding or disintegrating.
A kilonova is unusually rare, which means that not much is known about it. Finding a single star that has reached the end of its life cycle is challenging enough, never mind finding two stars that are merging.
But a kilonova was recently spotted by N.A.S.A’s Hubble Telescope, and it was truly something exceptional, extraordinarily rare, and breathtaking.
