Rashford speaks candidly about being disciplined by manager Erik ten Hag: ‘I fell asleep’

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford revealed why he was suddenly dropped for the away match at Wolves – where he came off the bench to score the only goal of the game.

Marcus Rashford has admitted he was dropped from Manchester United’s starting line-up against Wolves because he overslept.

The 25-year-old was left on the bench after what Erik ten Hag called an “internal disciplinary issue” before the 1-0 win at the Molineux on Saturday. Teenager Alejandro Garnacho started instead of the England international as fans were left scratching their heads prior to kick-off.

Rashford came on at half-time and capped off a superb performance by scoring the only goal of the game in the 76th minute. And he explained how he was dropped after being late to a team meeting.

He said after the game: “Yeah, obviously, it is the team rules and I think it is a mistake that can happen,” he told BT Sport.

“I am obviously disappointed not to play, but I understand the decision. I am happy that we have managed to win the game anyway. I think we can draw a line under it and move on.”

When pushed on the reason behind his absence by Des Kelly, Rashford added: “I was a little bit late for a meeting. I slept in, overslept. It can happen.”

Rashford silenced any potential critics following his misdemeanour with another impressive display for the Red Devils. He made an instant impact after being brought on, taking 23 touches and registering two shots on target.

The speedy forward is currently in red hot form, having notched three goals and an assist since his return from the World Cup – where he also netted three. Ten Hag will hope the pair can quickly move on from the issue ahead of the Premier League fixture at home against Bournemouth on Tuesday.
