The Suicide Squad’s Margot Robbie explains the secret history of how co-star Cena, now acting alongside her as Peacemaker, became part of her life.
It turns out that Margot Robbie was semi-close to her The Suicide Squad co-star John Cena long before they ever met each other in person.
Robbie and Cena, dressed in his Peacemaker costume, appeared alongside director James Gunn on Jimmy Kimmel Live where guest-host Anthony Anderson asked her to explain the “history” between her and Cena.
According to Robbie, she enjoyed WWE as a child but later dated someone “who was obsessed with John Cena, so much so that he dressed as John Cena for his 21st birthday and had a cardboard cutout of John Cena in his bedroom. So I slept in a room for two years with a life-sized cardboard cutout of John in the room.”
Robbie revealed to a flustered Cena that she wasn’t sure whether to reveal this story to him when working on The Suicide Squad. Initially, she thought “I’m just gonna keep that to myself, I’m not going to tell him, that would be a weird way to start our working relationship and friendship, and then five seconds into meeting him I was like ‘I used to sleep in a room with a life-sized cutout of you!'” When Anderson noted the awkwardness of sleeping in a room with your girlfriend while a life-sized image watches, Cena interjected, “In my defense, I more than likely was wearing jean shorts.”
The Suicide Squad will mark Robbie’s third time playing the DC Extended Universe’s version of Harley Quinn, following the original Suicide Squad and her 2020 solo film Birds of Prey.
Cena most recently appeared in the latest Fast & Furious sequel F9 as Jakob, the estranged brother of Dominic and Mia Toretto. He will reprise his role as Peacemaker for an upcoming HBO Max series of the same name produced by Gunn, who recently announced that the Peacemaker spinoff had wrapped up filming.
The show will explore Peacemaker’s backstory and why, according to Cena, Peacemaker ‘sucks’ as a hero.
