Zack Snyder, known for starting the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel, is boldly responding to the critics, revealing why the modern-day audience does not understand what the filmmaker is trying to achieve with his DC movies. Even though the director has moved on from DC, the chap still has a dedicated fanbase who wants the SnyderVerse to be restored.

During a Q&A at Zack Snyder‘s Full Circle charity event, the 57-year-old director finally released why most of the negative reviews for his 2016 DC film, Batman v Superman stemmed from audiences not being able to pick up his multi-layered approach to storytelling.

Even though poorly received, the movie grossed over $873.6 million worldwide. Defending the Ben Affleck-starring film, which suffered a historic drop in its second weekend (and never recovering back), Snyder said:
“I think, and maybe I’m wrong. but I feel like a lot of people went into the movies for going like, ‘Oh, it’s the superhero romp, right? Let’s have fun with it. And we gave them this sort of hardcore deconstructivist, heavily layered, experiential modern mythological superhero movie that needs…that you really need to pay attention to.”
The Sucker Punch director, who stepped away from DC in 2017 following the death of his daughter, Autumn Snyder, leaving Josh Whedon as the uncredited director for Justice League, returned to make his director’s cut with Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2020.
Zack Snyder Is A Visionary To Some, An Idiot To Others
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is often quoted as “a ‘funereal’, even though most funerals are shorter than four hours.” As Warner Bros. decided to step away, focusing more on individual characters, HBO confided in Snyder’s approach, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League was released on HBO Max in 2021, dedicated to the memory of his daughter.
Undoubtedly, the movie was considered superior to the 2017 theatrical release, which underperformed at the box office, and Snyder indeed rose from the ashes. He was widely praised for his “visual style, action sequences, direction and balance of emotional weight and humor,” except for the lengthy runtime.
Zack Snyder is currently working on Netflix’s Rebel Moon
While some may continue to call Snyder “an idiot” and “not a good storyteller,” the director has since moved on with his Netflix projects. He is presently working on Rebel Moon, an epic space opera, based on a story he created with Kurt Johnstad (known for his screenplay for Aquaman).
Snyder may be happy where he is, but there is still a section of fans who hope to restore the SnyderVerse. While James Gunn and Peter Safran disown this idea, Snyder’s fans have used the hashtag “sellthesnyderversetonetflix,” hoping Netflix could offer more of Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Jared Leto-era DC movies.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is available on Amazon Prime Video.
