With her alter-ego: Margot Robbie revealed it was ’emotionally traumatic’ to play abused and disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding, right, in I, Tonya, in a cover story for THR on Thursday
She told the magazine, she and Tonya had met only briefly before shooting began and that they watched the movie together at its Los Angeles premiere in early December.
The following day the native Australian told the former figure skater she’d ‘found it emotionally traumatic to put [herself] in the mind-set of someone who’s in an abusive relationship.’
The biopic tells Tonya’s rise and fall surrounding the infamous 1994 attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan before the Winter Olympics.
Her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, played by Sebastian Stan, payed a heavy to break Nancy’s legs. But he botched the attack, leaving the ice star badly bruised but still able to compete.
Dark side: The 27-year-old talked about reliving the ‘abuse’ the athlete suffered at the hands of her mother, played by Allison Janney, and husband, played by Sebastian Stan
However, it lead to a life ban from the sport for Tonya, who had been physically and mentally abused by both her husband and her mother, played by Allison Janney.
Margot produced the movie via her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, which she founded in 2014 with her husband of one year, Tom Ackerley, and a couple of their friends.
She set up the production company to find roles for herself and other women after finding fame as the fiery wife of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort in 2013 box-office smash The Wolf Of Wall Street.
Beautiful blonde: Former figure skater Tonya, 47, and Margot only met on a few occasions
That led to a slew of offers to play the ‘hot wife or girlfriend’ of other A-list actors.
And that wasn’t part of Margot’s career plan that she had set up when she arrived in Hollywood in 2010 – ‘quality, versatility and longevity.’
‘You could read a script and almost pull them out and nothing else would be affected,’ she told THR.
Producing partners: Margot with husband Tom Ackerley, 28, at LAX on January 2. They set up LuckyChap Entertainment with two pals iun 2014 and I, Tonya was their first project
However, Margot did take the part of scantily clad supervillain Harley Quinn in 2016 blockbuster Suicide Squad.
But she wasn’t ready for the superstar status that came with it – or the stalkers and death threats that now force her to spend a lot of money on personal security.
And she said she wished someone had explained to her that that’s what comes with the turf. ‘I wouldn’t have resented the position I found myself in because I would’ve known what I was getting myself into.’
On the ice: Tonya, played by Margot, gets bad news from a law enforcement officer while she’s with ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, played by Sebastian Stan,
Despite that, she’s due’s due to reprise the role in four films including Suicide Squad 2 in 2019.
Balancing that she’s also starring as Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen Of Scots, set in the mid 1500s, due out November 2. And she will voice Flopsy in animated family tale Peter Rabbit, set for release on February 9.
Other projects include Dreamland, Terminal and an as-yet-untitled Quentin Tarantino/1969 film.
Don’t mess with her: Margot certainly made her mark as scantily clad supervillain Harley Quinn in 2016 blockbuster Suicide Squad
