Hydrangeas are one of my favourite front and backyard flowers.
Unquestionably they are beautiful, but it’s also a form of the stall shop because my mom had gorgeous hydrangeas in our yard growing up. I suspect they were one of her favourite flowers as well.
As you’ll see in our extensive hydrangea garden ideas gallery below, hydrangeas are frequently used in front and back yards, sometimes along a picket fence or else along the wall of the house. In fact my mom grew several large hydrangea flower bushes along one side of our home growing up.
Since most homes do not have a picket fence, one of the best placements is a long the front, side or back of a home. The reason this is such a great location for hydrangeas is they are dense and so they completely cover the wall of a home, plus they grow to approximately 4 to 5 feet in height and so they don’t obscure or cover windows.
But the number one reason to plant and grow hydrangeas as part of your overall landscaping, or create stunning hydrangea only gardens, examples of which you can see below, is that they are truly beautiful flowers.
In addition to the nostalgic factor, one big reason I really like the look of hydrangeas as they are dense, bushy, and the flowers themselves can grow to be very large which I like. Hydrangeas are a terrific mix of green and colours.
As you’ll see below, hydrangea the colours include pink, blue, violet, yellow white and we even have an example of a bright red hydrangea, although that is less common than the other colours.
Finally, hydrangeas can be planted in large pots to create gorgeous full potted flowers perfect for placing on patios, decks and porches.
