Allow us to introduce you to The Wattled Bellbird. The Wattled Bellbird is a migratory bird that is mostly found in Central America.
This bird is so loud that it can easily produce sounds at a range of 100 decibels. In fact, it is considered as one of the loudest birds in the world.
Male Wattled Bellbird has a white head, while the rest of its color is brown. It also features three long wattles on its beak, which is said to be used by the males for display, to attract the females during the mating season.
Female Wattled Bellbirds are olive in color with yellow streaks. They are also smaller in size, which makes it easy to distinguish the sex of Wattled bellbird.
The Wattled Bellbirds were first spotted in Costa Rica. It breeds in the mountains of the said place and eventually migrated to Nicaragua, Panama, and western Honduras.
Being a shy and secretive bird, you won’t often see them up close. But due to their loud sounds, it is easier to hear them than see them.

Scientific name – Procnias tricarunculatus
The male Wattled Bellbird has a brownish red plumage and white head with 3 long dangling wattles which made them look like they have a mustache similar to the legendary Fu Man Chu.
The females don’t have wattles and they are olive in color.
Loud birds
The wattled bellbird sounded like hundreds of bells with noisy clicks. That is why they are considered as one of the world’s loudest birds.
Vulnerable
While you can see the wattled bellbird in the high areas of Costa Rica, you may also find them in Panama and eastern Honduras.
However, according to the IUCN, the wattled bellbird are considered vulnerable due to the decrease in population caused by the decrease in habitat.
Size
The size of an adult male Wattled bellbird is around 30 cm in length. Females are generally smaller and do not have the wattles that males have.
The wattles found in the male wattled bellbirds can stretch up to 10 cm long. The middle wattle can also be in an upright position.
Altitudinal Migrant Birds
These birds mostly feed on large fruits found in the Lauraceae family. These are the fruits found in the high lands which is why these birds would often roam across territories to find food.
Humans Can Hear Them From Half A Mile Away
These birds are very secretive and are often shy. But in spite of that, humans can easily know that there are Wattled bellbirds around because you can surely hear their bell-like calls and “bonk” from half a mile away.
