Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 are already creating buzz. But will there ever be Mission: Impossible 9? Read to find out.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout was undeniably a masterpiece addition to the Mission: Impossible franchise, having a notch higher in drama and action than its previous versions. Moreover, the excellent addition of Henry Cavill as August Walker, a notorious extremist working to create a new world order, even amped up the excitement amongst fans for the film. Riding high on the positive critical reactions and commercial success, acclaimed studio Paramount Pictures didn’t waste any time and immediately charted the course for the next installments in the franchise.
With the global pandemic hitting the entertainment industry, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 was no exception in experiencing the wrath of novel pandemic-related delays in production and post-production. But things improved, and the fans are patiently waiting for the release of the new Mission: Impossible on July 14, 2023, with Mission: Impossible 8 arriving in 2024. As the release day is inching closer, naturally, fans are witnessing an overwhelming bombardment of teasers, trailers, and behind-the-scenes stories.
Although there is much to be explored through the eyes of Ethan Hunt in the coming Mission Impossible 7 & 8, one of the major causes of distress among fans is the future of Hunt after the eighth entry in the franchise. Naturally, there have been a lot of speculation and rumors concerning Mission: Impossible 9 and whether Dead Reckoning represents the end of the franchise. Here’s what we know.
Will There Be Mission: Impossible 9?
Paramount PicturesFilm director Christopher McQuarrie has been sending mixed signals about the future of the franchise. On an episode of the podcast, Light the Fuse, when asked about the rumors of the end of the franchise after M:I8, the director replied, “Let me tell you, I’ve been working with Tom Cruise for 15 years and I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve been standing next to the man, witnessed an event and then read about it in the trades the next day and none of what they describe is actually true.”
He further added, “When you read articles in the trades, just put the imaginary word in front of the headline: ‘The Agenda Is…’ When you read ‘anonymous sources’ or ‘sources close to the production say,’ that’s somebody putting it out there for a specific reason. That’s someone wanting others to think that for a specific reason, and you can never know for sure what those reasons are. You learn to ignore it and laugh at it. In today’s world, you wait 17 minutes and another news cycle will sweep it away.”
The director clearly has issued a caveat for fans for not drawing any assumptions about MI 9 and definitely not believing everything circulating the internet. True, his words were neither confirming nor denying the possibility of the next Mission Impossible movie, but we all know how unpredictable the entertainment industry is. In fact, in the cinema business, it’s always never say never.
What to Expect from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1
Paramount PicturesSo far, the plot of Dead Reckoning has tightly been kept under wraps. But on the Light the Fuse podcast, McQuarrie did talk about drawing inspiration from Fallout and giving the same emotional arc to all the characters of upcoming entries. At this poiint, we will have to wait and see how that plays out for Hunt and others.
Further, in an interview with Empire Magazine, the director even mentions that the characters from Ethan’s past will re-emerge to change the course of his life. He said, “There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past. Dead Reckoning is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.”
Truly, the fans can’t wait to unpack what is in store for them in these new installments. Meanwhile, as far as the cast of the film is concerned, fans will be reintroduced to old cast members like Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Venessa Kirby, Ving Rhames, and Esai Morales, among many others. Moreover, it is also set to onboard new members like Hayley Atwell and Shea Whigham. Regardless of the little knowledge of the plot and characters, one thing is for sure: with Tom Cruise helming the film, it is going to be epic!
