The stone sculpture depicting the faces of four US presidents on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is a famous work that has appeared in many cult movies such as American Rangers, National Treasures, etc. family, The Book of Secrets or North to Northwest.
The 18-meter-tall structure carved into the granite on Mount Rushmore is the face of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum started this project with the aim of attracting tourists. After securing federal funds, construction of the memorial began in 1927 and the portraits of the four presidents were completed between 1934 and 1939. When Gutzon Borglum died in March 1941. , his son Lincoln Borglum continued his father’s work.
Gutzon Borglum designed the secret room but unfortunately he died before completing it.
This secret room called the Hall of Records is located right behind the statue of President Lincoln.
There is a path behind the 4 statues.
The room was built with the purpose of preserving and passing on to future generations information and documents about the history of the United States. However, sadly, visitors cannot access this room because it is too dangerous.
The original idea was to sculpt busts of four famous presidents, but the project could not be implemented due to lack of funds.
After the sculptor Borglum died, construction of this room was halted for decades.
Therefore, although construction began in 1920, it was not until 1990 that this room was completed.
Ceramic reliefs documenting moments of American history such as the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Declaration of Human Rights and even a biography of Gutzon Borglum, all housed in a wooden box , protected by a locked titanium box on the assumption that, thousands of years later, the people of another civilization will find and understand our time.
These documents are now carefully preserved and are difficult to access.
