Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on the future of full-back Joao Cancelo, who continues to struggle at Bayern Munich following a surprise loan switch in January.
The 28 year-old swapped East Manchester for Bavaria on a short-term loan in January, as the Portugal international dramatically moved to Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season after falling out of favour at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite making 23 starts for City this season, the versatile full-back opted to leave the reigning Premier League champions less than one year after signing a contract extension until 2027.
Bayern Munich have the opportunity to make the transfer permanent in the summer for €70 million, but aren’t obligated to sign the Portuguese international.
Cancelo has endured a frustrating start to life in Germany, with the 28 year-old making just four starts and featuring only from the bench against PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has also recently criticised Cancelo, saying that he had failed to make a “good impression” in training.
“I told Joao [Cancelo] my point of view after a training session where he didn’t make a good impression, we spoke, he always had a good reaction.”
The full-back is due to start in Bayern’s Bundesliga match against Augsburg on Saturday afternoon in what will be the defenders eighth appearance.
Amid a difficult start to life away from Manchester City, manager Pep Guardiola provided an update on Cancelo’s future at the Etihad Stadium beyond this season, ahead of City’s visit to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
“Joao [Cancelo] is a player for Bayern Munich I don’t have any comments.
“He’s at Bayern Munich, at the end of the season we will review all the cases of players.”
Cancelo could come up against his parent club this season, should Manchester City progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The Blues are level going into the second-leg against RB Leipzig on Tuesday, and should they progress then they could be drawn against Cancelo’s current club in the next round.
