Kylian Mbappe seemed destined to become a Real Madrid player less than a year ago. So much so that the PSG star was cheered by supporters at Santiago Bernabeu last season, when the two teams met in the UEFA Champions League last season. The Frenchman would go on to do the unexpected though, and extended his contract.
That was a huge blow to Real Madrid, who had looked set to land arguably the best player in the world as a free agent before that. And seeing how the transfer saga turned out, many Los Blancos supporters never wanted to see the club being linked Mbappe ever again.
Yet, as the months have passed, Mbappe has continued to perform at a world-class level and recently became PSG’s all-time record goalscorer at just 24 years of age. On the other hand, Real Madrid have struggled for consistency.
It also looks like Mbappe only signed a two-year extension with PSG with the player having the option to extend it by another year. As a result, rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid are doing the rounds once again.
Latest Mbappe update is bad news for Real Madrid
There had even been some suggestions lately that the French club could consider letting the World Cup winner go for a transfer fee around €200 million. But a report from PSG Talk goes on to read:
Anything that happens this summer will be to build the team around Mbappé instead of using him to fund a rebuild. The France international’s contract extension at the end of last season has made it trickier for PSG to assemble the right pieces around him but sporting advisor Luis Campos has shown an eye for free agents in their prime with Škriniar.
Mbappé will be at Parc des Princes for at least one more year and expect the optional final year of his deal to become a major topic next campaign. PSG can strengthen their hand by making good on last year’s promises and overhauling the squad in a meaningful way which does not compromise on depth as this current one has—especially in defense.
Thus, it looks like PSG intend to build around Mbappe rather than letting him go in the summer. Of course, that would be a blow to the hopes of those Real Madrid fans, who wanted to see him at the club next season.
The interesting thing will be whether Mbappe decides to activate the option to extend his contract by a further year. If not, there will only be 12 months left on his deal this summer.
