Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran met up with Chris Hemsworth, star of Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder, and gave him a guitar in exchange for Mjolnir.
Hemsworth shared a video on Twitter of Sheeran giving away one of his prized stage guitars. “Basically, I’m really into trading trade tools for trade tools, so I’m gonna give one of my guitars in exchange for someone else’s tool,” Sheeran said. Upon receiving the gift, Hemsworth responds that he has his own “weapon of choice” to exchange: a replica of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the hammer Mjolnir was last seen in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. After being shattered in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, the hammer is reformed by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in Love and Thunder, who discovers the weapon’s remains and gains its power after being diagnosed with cancer. At the end of the film, Thor once again reclaims the hammer for himself and passes Stormbreaker on to Love, the young daughter of the film’s villain Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale).
Who Is Worthy to Wield Mjolnir in the MCU?
Besides Thor and Jane, only a few characters in the MCU have been deemed “worthy” to wield Mjolnir. The hammer was notably wielded by Captain America (Chris Evans) during the climactic battle in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Similarly, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Hela (Cate Blanchett), and Vision (Paul Bettany) have also been able to lift the hammer. Sheeran may be “worthy” to wield the signed gift, but even though he’s made cameos in Game of Thrones and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he has yet to appear in the MCU.
At the time of writing, it is unknown when Thor will appear next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though the credits of Love and Thunder claim that “Thor will return” at some point. While Thor’s future in the MCU has not been confirmed, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously stated that there is potential for a fifth or sixth film starring the God of Thunder at some point.
Hemsworth, however, said in November 2022 that if there were to be a Thor 5, it would need to take on “a drastically different version in tone” than previous films. The actor also added that he’d be open to returning as Thor if Marvel Studios treats the return as the character’s conclusion. “You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know—am I at that stage? Who knows?” he said.
Thor: Love and Thunder is currently available to stream on Disney+.
