“You don’t know anything!” Graham Potter shows new side in Chelsea press conference

Chelsea boss Graham Potter has come out fighting in a press conference after he was quizzed on what makes him angry as he went on to reference his rise as a manager

Graham Potter showed his angry side during a Chelsea press conference as he snapped at questions about his temperament by telling a reporter “you don’t know anything about anything.”

The Chelsea boss, who has endured a mixed time since moving to Stamford Bridge from Brighton, has seen his mannerisms on the touchline become a topic of discussion. Potter rarely loses his cool despite his team’s poor run of results and has remained a composed character… on the whole.

Potter did offer a low-key dig in a recent interview when he said he had to be “respectful even though some of your questions are stupid.” Now, ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, the 47-year-old insists he does get angry and maintained he wouldn’t have enjoyed the success he has without a mean streak.

He was asked what makes him angry and replied: “Apart from these questions? I would say, I’m careful not to get into discussion with the media through the media but of course I get angry, I’m a human being just like you. It’s just that I choose to conduct myself the way that I think that’s the right way to be on the sideline.

“I think the same media being more angry and then running stories about problems with referees at grassroots – I don’t see a connection. That’s not to say we don’t all lose out temper, because we do, it is an emotional thing. But at the same I think I have a responsibility to myself, to Chelsea, to the game – to act in the right way for me, not for anybody else.

“If you think that you can start a coaching career in the ninth tier of English football and get to this point now as the Chelsea boss, without getting angry or being nice, then I’d suggest you don’t know anything about anything.”

Potter first caught the attention courtesy of his success in Sweden with Ostersunds – who he guided through the divisions, eventually taking them into Europe. A spell at Swansea saw him land the Brighton job, where he recorded their best ever Premier League finish.

Todd Boehly now believes Potter can be the man to take Chelsea back to the top, having handed him a big deal when he hired him as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement. The Stamford Bridge hierarchy are prepared to be patient with Potter as they face the reality of no Champions League football next term.

Potter has said on their clash in Dortmund: “It’s the knockout stage of the Champions League. The absolute pinnacle in terms of the game. It’s a great test playing against a fantastic club in front of 80,000 here, so a wonderful occasion. We’re all looking forward to the match, we all understand the challenge that awaits us but are really excited about it.”
