Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is worried about the resurgence of Man Utd under Erik ten Hag as their “spirit” is gradually coming back.
The Red Devils finished sixth last season on 58 points with Ralf Rangnick taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer part way through the campaign.
After 22 matches this term Man Utd sit third in the Premier League table on 43 points with Ten Hag’s side on target to finish inside the top four and qualify for Europe.
It seems Ten Hag has brought discipline and a togetherness in the squad, demonstrated by his handling of Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit and Jadon Sancho’s early-season struggles.
And Carragher insists it’s a “worry” for Liverpool fans that Man Utd that Ten Hag seems to “know what he’s doing”.
“It does feel different to me under Erik ten Hag,” Carragher said on Sky Bet’s The Overlap.
“I always felt there was a negativity around the previous managers. With Jose Mourinho it felt like there were problems between him and the board.
“With Louis van Gaal, I’m not sure the fans were ever on board with his style of football. And with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], no one ever thought he would be a manager who could win United a title.
“But now it feels like they’ve got a manager who knows what he’s doing. Also, it feels like there’s a spirit at United that we haven’t seen for a while.
“It feels like that’s coming back. I think there’s something happening at Manchester United that I didn’t see with those other managers. So it’s worry, yeah!”
The Premier League title race has been heating up in recent weeks with Arsenal and Man City dropping points at the weekend with Man Utd pulling three points back on both those sides in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.
Arsenal are currently five points clear of second-placed Man City – who the Gunners also have a game in hand on – while Man Utd are two points adrift of rivals Man City after picking up another point against Leeds in midweek.
But Carragher can only see Arsenal or Man City winning the title and the former Liverpool defender is tipping Mikel Arteta’s men for glory.
Carragher added: “I’ve tipped them for the title because I’m not sure Man City can get back to their best.
“The longer Man City are like this, the more breathing space Arsenal have got. That buffer Arsenal have right now is quite sizable. I think they will hold on.”
Rams Bring In Manchester United Goalkeeper
Ramsbottom United have signed young Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Wooster on loan for the remainder of the season. In 2021, Wooster joined United’s U18s from Barnsley.
He was named Academy Player of the Year during the 2020/21 campaign, and since joining United he has played semi-regularly for their U18s side.
Hailing from Yorkshire, the young goalkeeper has also represented England at youth level and signed his first professional deal with the Reds last Apri.
Wooster made his Rams debut against Workington AFC on Tuesday night.
He played a crucial role in their 1-1 draw with the promotion hopefuls, saving a last-minute penalty to ensure the team bottom of the Pitching In NPL West Division secured a valuable point on the road.
On his arrival, Wooster said: “Before joining Rammy, I spoke with some of the coaches and the loan manager at Manchester United and we all decided that a loan was the best thing for my development.
“We sat down and looked at the options but it was Ramsbottom that really appealed to me.
“The manager, coaches and all the lads have made me feel really welcome. I’ve enjoyed training with everyone and I’m feeling sharp.”
Rams manager Lee Doanfee said: “Tom has settled in really well with the group in the two weeks that he’s been here.
“Making your debut away to Workington is always going to be a tough test, but I felt it was one that he came through with his head held high.”
