The movie will put on “a big show” with “master level” fighting and a huge “car-fu” sequence.
Keanu Reeves has promised more action than ever before in John Wick 4, setting audience expectations for plenty of shootouts, martial arts combat, and “next-level” stunt driving.
“John Wick: Chapter 4 has the most action of any of the [John Wick] films, which is saying a lot,” Reeves told Total Film in the latest issue of the magazine. “And it’s more by a good margin. It’s a big show.”
John Wick 4: The Cast of the Action Sequel
Reeves went on to say that Chapter 4 presented “the hardest physical role of his career” and that it required some extensive training on his part. He explained that he had to hone a few of the skills in his “toolbox,” especially since the movie is reintroducing “car-fu” to the series.
“John Wick: Chapter 4 was the hardest physical role I’ve ever had in my career so far. They really trained me up to be able to have what we call the toolbox,” he said. “We took the car-driving to the next level… There’s 180s, forward-into-reverse 180s, reverse into-forward 270s, drifting… So it was really fun to get a chance to learn those skills, and to play.”
John Wick 4 also adds martial arts superstar Donnie Yen to the mix, playing Caine, an old buddy of Wick’s who shares the same enemies. He is bringing his “master-level fighting abilities” to the sequel, further enhancing the stunts and action sequences this time around.
“He is not an actor that you have to train for each specific fight. He is a great actor who is also a trained fighter. His ability to enhance the choreography through his own creativity is world-class,” stunt coordinator Scott Rogers said of Yen’s performance, noting that it turned into “something very special” when paired up with Reeves.
Reeves concluded that John Wick: Chapter 4 is an “opus” of a movie, which is both “crazy” and “banana cakes” to watch — so if they’re the qualities you’re looking for in a film, you might want to give the hotly-anticipated fourth flick a watch when it opens in cinemas on March 24.
